Johnny Ball Lecture at St Richard’s Catholic College

On Monday 12^th July eight year 8 students went to St Richard’s Catholic College to listen to Johnny Ball give a lecture on Maths and Science. This formed part of the Gifted and Talented enrichment programme. As most adults will remember from his television programmes, Johnny is a very passionate and inspirational speaker. He made it clear to all the students how important Maths and Science are in the world and that they have the ability within them to succeed but must choose to be educated and educate themselves in order to do so. He also made the interesting point that 30% of the jobs that will be available to them in the future haven’t even been created yet because technology is constantly evolving.

A lot of the topics he covered were extremely fascinating and need to be looked at in depth. So, for those of you who have an interest in Maths and Science, you might want to Google the following and impress your teachers with your new found knowledge:

Egyptian pyramids and mathematics

Trivia Challenge at Bishop Bell School

On Monday 5^th July four year 9 students (who were, coincidentally, all in the Faraday Community) travelled to Bishop Bell school to take part in an annual trivia quiz. We were competing against four other schools: Cavendish, Hailsham, Willingdon and, of course, Bishop Bell.

The first round saw us come joint first with three of the other schools. In the second round we also got full marks, but unfortunately that is where our luck ran out! Throughout the 4 other rounds our scores gradually went downhill and even a last fantastic effort from the ETC team was not enough to move us any further up the board.

In the end, we finished in third place, with Willingdon as the victorious team and Hailsham and Cavendish in joint second (at least we didn’t come last!).

The challenge was great fun for everyone involved and we would definitely recommend it to anyone who is thinking of taking part next year.

Chess Tournament at Bishop Bell School

On Monday 5^th July, four of our keen chess players went along to Bishop Bell school to compete against players from Cavendish, Hailsham, Willingdon and, of course, Bishop Bell. Unfortunately, all four players were randomly chosen to be in the initial play-offs to decide the final 16, and Lord Greger and Chadly Robson were disappointingly knocked out straightaway.

Christian Faustino was then beaten in about 2 moves by James of Cavendish, who beat one of our year 10 boys in the final 2 years ago as a year 7! Christian was understandably disappointed with this and will hopefully come back next year to fight for a place higher up in the rankings! Max Hay played some fantastic chess to get through to the 3^rd round, losing to the same James who beat Christian. James decently said that Max had proven to be a good challenge but went on to win the whole tournament for the second year, beating a player from Hailsham who has played nationally in the past.

As you can see, competition at these events is strong, so if you’d like to participate next year, please make sure you get practising! Mr Duffield hosts a Chess Club in his room every Wednesday lunchtime so you have no excuse not to play!

Well done team. I’m very proud of you and I hope we can do better next year.

Youth’s Got Talent 2010

On Sunday 25^th April 20 acts from schools across Eastbourne and Hailsham were watched by over 300 spectators at The Winter Garden. ETC had 4 acts participating, 2 students helping with lighting backstage and a student and teacher judge. This annual event began 3 years ago and is growing in popularity and standard of competition.

Unfortunately, we did not make it to the top 3, but Kieran Farnes, playing his ukulele and singing ‘I’m yours’ by Jason Mraz came fourth and Kayla McCarthy and Chloe Stamp dancing to ‘Candy Man’ by Christina Aguilera came joint fifth with Lauren Morris, Abbie Corke, Abbie Smith, Jade French, Stella Jones and Emily Crouch who performed their version of ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson.

I’d like to thank Meg Summerford, Chelsie Phillips and Jade Punshon for their performance of Justin Bieber’s ‘Love me’. I know all 3 girls are determined to come back next year and make their act bigger and better as they only put it together a day before! I’d also like to give a big thank you to Zoe Drummond and Amy Hylands for spending almost 12 hours at The Winter Garden helping out backstage with the lighting. Finally, thank you to Lauren Summerford for being my student judge. Going on the amount of laughing and clapping, I know she enjoyed it as much as I did!

This evening has been a huge success every year and is immensely entertaining. I am extremely proud of all of our students who took part either on or off the stage. Thank you to all the parents and extended family that came along to support us and to Mrs Marriot for bringing along her family too!

This event will be held again next year at about the same time, so I’d like us all to start preparing now! Watch this space for more information…

I really enjoy English Master Class. It’s really interesting because we do lots of drama. We went on a trip to Sussex University to train trainee teachers. Mr Hobbs talked to them for a while and then the group went to different tables to come up with a drama piece to perform in front of everyone else.

I’m really glad I joined the English Master Class!

Master Class is fun because we do a lot of drama and not very much writing. There have been a few trips and many more to come and I think it is great! We also have a very friendly teacher that listens to your ideas and problems and helps sort them out.

My name is Chelsie. I am 12 years old and I have recently joined the Master Class. I really enjoy it because you can learn new things and it boosts your confidence. We do drama and recently they all went to Sussex University. I would have but I hadn’t joined by then. It is very good and it is more fun than it sounds. It is for years 7, 8 and 9. I think there is a separate one for years 10 and 11.

P.S. There are lots of girls so we need MORE BOYS!

English Master Class

I have been coming to the English Master Class for a few weeks now and so far I quite like it. We went to Sussex University for the afternoon not long ago to help Mr Hobbs train some teachers. I enjoyed it.

It’s not like a normal lesson because we choose what we’re going to do and learn.It’s on for about an hour once a week…and it gives you big opportunities that will help you in later life!

English Master Class

Hi my name is Dannielle and I joined the Master Class in September. I really enjoy it because you learn new words and what they mean. We went to Sussex University on 15th January and it was very interesting because you got to work with adults and plan to do acting. You get to know other people in the Master Class and work with years 7, 8 and 9. You may think that in Master Class we just do writing but we don’t, we do acting. So if you’re interested to join come and see me or Mr Hobbs. It will be great if you come and join. I’m glad I joined!
